The Westerville and Newark communities are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Mike “Sped” Peddicord, who passed away suddenly after suffering a cardiac event. His passing has left family, friends, and classmates from the Newark High School Class of 1979 reeling with sadness yet filled with gratitude for the extraordinary life he lived and the countless lives he touched.
Mike was admired not only for his athletic talent but for his heart, humility, and faith. From his early days at John Clem Elementary to his years as a standout athlete at Newark High and later Capital University, Mike was known for his leadership, kindness, and genuine spirit. His teammates, classmates, and coaches remember him as a man of character—someone who lifted others up, led with quiet strength, and brought out the best in those around him.
A lifelong friend and classmate shared, “Mike was hands down one of the most admired people in our class. I last heard from him a few weeks ago when he sent me a simple message: ‘Happy Birthday, Johnny. I hope you were celebrated.’ That was Mike—thoughtful, kind, and always taking the time to make others feel seen and valued.”
Those who knew Mike best recall his love for the outdoors, his deep appreciation for music, his generosity, and his steadfast faith. His conversations were filled with substance—about life, travel, family, and the things that truly matter. “After every conversation,” one friend shared, “I had grown as a person. To say he was one of the greats is an immense understatement.”
Professionally, Mike was admired for his integrity and dedication. He approached every endeavor with passion and sincerity, earning respect from colleagues and friends alike. Yet beyond his accomplishments, it was his role as a father that he cherished most. He was a proud and loving dad to his children—Kevin, Jonathon, and Jennifer—who were his greatest joy and legacy.
Mike’s faith was central to who he was. Those close to him find comfort in knowing that he came to know Christ and embraced the promise of eternal life. While his sudden passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, the assurance of his peace in Heaven brings solace to those who mourn him.
“Well done, good and faithful servant,” captures the life Mike lived—one defined by service, friendship, and love. His light will continue to shine in the memories and hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.
Rest peacefully, Mike “Sped” Peddicord. You were one of the greats, and your legacy will endure forever.
