Matthew Shealy Death, Obituary: The Spartanburg community is heartbroken to learn of the reported passing of Matthew Shealy, a devoted husband, father, and accomplished attorney whose brilliance, compassion, and unwavering dedication left an indelible mark on the legal profession and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A partner at Knie & Shealy, Matthew built his reputation on integrity, intellect, and an unrelenting commitment to justice. Over his distinguished 15-year career, he handled some of the most complex and challenging cases in South Carolina — from murder trials to securities fraud — earning the respect and admiration of peers, judges, and clients alike. Known as a skilled problem solver and trial lawyer, he approached every case with meticulous preparation and a heart for advocacy, ensuring that each client received both strong representation and genuine care.
Matthew’s path in law began early, inspired by his father, Thomas E. Shealy, a respected attorney whose mentorship and example helped shape his son’s career. After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Classics from Hampden-Sydney College, graduating Summa Cum Laude, Matthew went on to obtain his Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he graduated Cum Laude and was recognized for academic excellence as a member of the Order of the Wig and Robe and the Order of the Coif. His sharp intellect and dedication to his craft were apparent from the very beginning.
Before founding and partnering in successful firms, Matthew spent nearly a decade as a Senior Assistant Public Defender for Spartanburg County, where he defended thousands of clients and honed the courtroom skills that made him one of the most respected criminal defense attorneys in the state. His belief that “very few people are evil; they just make mistakes” guided his practice and reflected his deep sense of empathy and humanity.
In recognition of his professional excellence, Matthew was named among the Top 40 Under 40 in Criminal Defense by the National Trial Lawyers Association — an honor that spoke not only to his legal skill but also to his tireless pursuit of justice.
Outside of his work, Matthew’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He was a devoted husband and father whose warmth, humor, and strength anchored his loved ones. Friends describe him as kind, thoughtful, and deeply loyal — someone who led with both intellect and heart.
Matthew Shealy’s passing is an immeasurable loss to the Spartanburg community and the legal world. His influence will live on through the lives he touched, the cases he fought, and the principles he stood for every day.
Rest in peace, Matthew. Your light, your legacy, and your love for justice will never be forgotten.
