The Michigan State University community is mourning the loss of Dr. Marilyn Amey, a beloved faculty member, mentor, and scholar from Okemos, Michigan, whose profound influence reached far beyond academia. Originally from Penfield, New York, Marilyn was known for her brilliance, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her students and colleagues.
A longtime faculty member at Michigan State University, Dr. Amey was more than an educator — she was a guiding light to countless graduate students who found in her not only a dissertation chair but also a source of inspiration, encouragement, and genuine care. Those who had the privilege of studying under her describe her as “wicked smart,” supportive, and always ready with humor and insight that made even the most daunting challenges seem achievable.
One former student shared, “Marilyn Amey was more than a PhD Dissertation chair to me. She made me feel seen and valued. She encouraged me to embrace who I was, even when I didn’t fit the academic mold. She believed in me before I believed in myself.”
Marilyn’s approach to mentorship was deeply human. She had a way of blending high expectations with heartfelt understanding, always reminding her students that “no is also an answer,” and that their voices mattered — even when their research didn’t yield groundbreaking results. Her wisdom, humor, and warmth created a space where students could grow both intellectually and personally.
